We study the function of the heart and cardiovascular system. Our approach is to describe the variations in excitation-contraction mechanisms among hearts from different animal species, developmental stage and pathophysiological status, and to understand their reasonability. We also collaborate with other researchers in the academia and pharmacological industry for the development of novel therapeutic agents. We routinely use techniques such as blood pressure and electrocardiographic measurements in whole animals, electrophysiological measurements with isolated myocardial tissue and cells, fluorescence imaging analysis of intracellular ion movements and enzymatic reactions. We enjoy the fascinating world of heart research ranging from evolution to drug discovery.
